MYP Tutoring: Why Assessment Criteria Matter Before the First Lesson

MYP in a school portal means your child has entered the IB Middle Years Programme, where learning is assessed through subject criteria, task-specific expectations, and ongoing feedback. Generic subject tutoring can leave a student practising the right topic in the wrong way before the first assessment cycle begins.

It is late in the evening, the school portal is open, and three unfamiliar letters sit beside the timetable: MYP. Maths is still maths. English still has reading and writing. Science still has experiments. Yet the labels around the work have changed, and the first parent question is usually practical: what does this mean for the help my child needs this term?

A familiar subject can come with unfamiliar assessment criteria

The MYP is designed for students aged roughly 11 to 16, but each school organises its subjects, tasks, reporting, and deadlines in its own way. A child may need help with algebra, essay structure, lab reports, or research. The important detail is how that work will be assessed in their MYP classroom.

A strong worksheet pack from another curriculum can still be useful practice. It may not prepare a student to explain their reasoning, respond to a criterion, complete an investigation, or revise a task after feedback. Those are habits a tutor should identify early, alongside the content gaps.

Ask the school for the current subject outlines, assessment criteria, recent teacher feedback, and the next major deadlines. Bring those into the first tutoring conversation. That distinction matters before a student has spent several weeks building confidence around work that will not appear in the same form at school.

One missing label can change an entire plan

A weekly lesson that covers only subject content can miss the way a student needs to show that knowledge. Equally, a study timetable can become crowded with revision tasks while leaving no time to respond to teacher feedback, finish a criterion-based assignment, or practise the command terms used in class.

The first assessment cycle is the best time to check the units before the plan is in motion. A parent does not need to become an IB specialist. They need enough information to make sure the tutor, student, and school materials are working from the same map.

Build the first term around evidence from school

Start with what is already visible in the portal and school communications. A useful first-term check includes:

• The exact MYP year group and subjects your child is taking.
• The next assessed task in each priority subject, including its due date and criteria.
• A recent piece of marked work, with teacher comments if available.
• The areas your child finds difficult: content knowledge, planning, writing, confidence, organisation, or understanding feedback.
• The family’s real availability, especially when school, activities, and time zones compete for the same evenings.
